Historical Churches in Carrollton, Texas

Today I went out on a exploratory trip of Carrollton in a bid to check out the historical locations in the small city. According to the city website the city got its name from the hometown of early settlers, who came from Carrollton, Illinois. The name became official on May 16, 1878, when the first U.S. Post Office was started.

I visited two of the oldest churches in Carrollton, the First United Methodist Church and the Hebron First Baptist Church.

The First United Methodist Church was first organised in August 1901. But like several churches I have come across, the location of the congregation has moved from its original location near the corner of Walnut St and Jackson St to its present location through a tumultous path. The first church structure was built in 1903 at Jackson St and Belt Line Rd and then the second was built at the same location in 1915, the third was constructed on Pearl St in 1957 and the present which is the 4th location location is very recently built (2003). The congregation celebrated its 100th anniversary on October 14th, 2001. Here are some pictures of the present church building.

The other old Church congregation I visited was the Hebron First Baptist Church, sited on East Hebron Parkway, this congregation was first organised in 1883 at the Willow Springs School and was known as Big Valley Baptist Church. According to a historical marker (board) installed in front of the church, there was a Sunday school named Union Sabbath School was established during the early years of the religious space’s existence. This church was also relocated to town of Hebron and given its present name in the early 1900s.

It seems from the information on the marker that the chruch has been in existence in this location since the 1920s but the building definitely doesn’t seem that old. Perhaps the older buildings were torn down and rebuilt, I am not aware. Since both the shrines were closed when I visited them I couldn’t get any more information apart from pictures. Perhaps there is nobody available on a Friday afternoon. Here are some pictures of the  Hebron First Baptist Church.
